How to choose a handmade ceramic gift
Share
I always think handmade ceramics make lovely gifts. They are something you can use every day, but at the same time, each piece has its own little character.
At Planina, I make everything by hand in my studio in Gothenburg, from colourful mugs and sculptural pieces to little objects for the home. Over the years, I've noticed that some pieces have become particularly popular as gifts, especially my mugs with breasts!
If you're looking for something a little different to give someone, I've put together a few ideas and tips to help you choose.
1. A handmade mug – always a good idea
You can never really go wrong with a mug. Most of us have a favourite one we reach for every morning, whether it's for tea, coffee or a big cup of cacao.
Mugs are also one of my most popular gifts, especially the ones with sculpted breasts. I think people love them because they're a little unexpected, playful and different from an ordinary mug.
They make lovely gifts for friends, sisters, mothers, partners or anyone who appreciates a bit of humour and doesn't mind something a little unusual.
A few things to think about when choosing a mug:
-
Size: Does the person prefer a small cup or a big mug for their morning drink?
-
Colours: Think about their favourite colours or the colours they have around their home.
-
Shape: Do they like something simple and classic, or are they drawn to unusual shapes and details?
-
Personality: Sometimes the best gift is something that makes someone smile. If they love playful things, a sculptural mug might be just the right choice.
And one little tip: don't worry too much about finding something that matches everything in their kitchen. Sometimes it's nice to have one special mug that stands out.

2. Put together a little ceramic gift set
If you want to give something a bit more than a single piece, a small ceramic set is a lovely option.
I've created a selection of combinations in my Handmade Gifts collection, bringing together pieces that work well together.
For example, a mug with a matching saucer and little spoon is perfect for someone who enjoys slow breakfasts, afternoon tea or a cosy moment with their favourite drink.
You can also find combinations with other ceramic pieces, making it easier to choose a gift without having to put everything together yourself.
When would I choose a ceramic gift set?
-
For someone moving into a new home.
-
For a birthday or a special occasion.
-
For someone who loves having beautiful things on their table.
-
For someone who enjoys their little everyday rituals.
I also think sets are a good option when you're not quite sure what to choose. You get a few pieces that complement each other, and the gift feels complete.

3. Choose something that suits their personality
This might sound obvious, but I think it's one of the most helpful things to consider when choosing a handmade gift.
Think about the person rather than the occasion.
Do they love colourful things and playful details? Are they more into earthy tones and natural textures? Or do they enjoy collecting unusual objects that you don't find everywhere?
For example, someone who loves colour might appreciate one of my colourful mugs, while someone who prefers more natural tones might enjoy a simple textured piece.
And if you know they love flowers, birds or a particular shape, that's always a good place to start.
You don't have to find something that fits perfectly into their home. It's much nicer to give them something you think they'll genuinely enjoy.
4. A few practical things to check before buying
Handmade ceramics are beautiful, but they're also made to be used. Here are a few things worth checking before choosing your gift:
-
Measurements and capacity: Check the size of the mug or bowl, especially if the person has a preference for larger or smaller cups.
-
Care instructions: My stoneware pieces are food-safe and dishwasher-safe, so they're made for everyday use.
-
Handmade variations: Every piece is shaped and glazed by hand, which means small differences in shape, colour and texture are completely normal. You won't find two exactly alike.
-
Delivery time: Ceramics take time to make, dry and fire. If you're buying for a particular occasion, it's always a good idea to order ahead, especially during the holiday season.
5. Why I love giving and receiving handmade things
I think there's something nice about knowing that someone spent time making the thing you're giving or receiving.
When I make a mug, I spend time shaping it, adding details, glazing it and waiting for it to go through the kiln. It's quite a process for something that might eventually become someone's everyday morning mug.
That's also what I love about handmade ceramics. They don't have to be perfect or identical. Small differences are part of the process, and I think they make each piece more interesting.
