Why clay smells so grounding?

Why clay smells so grounding?

Did you know that clay smells grounding?

Have you ever tried creating something from it with your own hands?

If not, come read this little story and sneak a peek into my new cozy space made for quiet creativity and slow, mindful moments. I hope it inspires you to give yourself a day this winter to slow down, breathe, and let the calming scent of clay guide you.

You know that earthy smell after rain, the one that makes you feel calm and grounded? It’s called petrichor. Scientists discovered that it comes from a mix of plant oils and a molecule called geosmin, which is actually produced by soil bacteria. Fun part: your nose is crazy sensitive to it. You can smell just a few parts per trillion. Basically, you can detect a single drop of geosmin in an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

And why are we so sensitive to it?

Some scientists believe that humans may appreciate the rain scent because ancestors relied on rainy weather for survival.

Clay has the same scent and I enjoy it every time I open a new bag of clay and catch that faint, earthy scent. It’s the smell of time itself, millions of years condensed into something soft in my hands.

And because it feels so grounding, I want you to experience a moment of calm and relaxation in a world that seems to rush a little more with each passing year.

That’s why I opened my Studio of Clay & Calm, a cozy, festive corner created just for holding workshops and gatherings.

If you’re longing for a small, intimate circle, my space is perfect, there will always be only a few participants so everyone can feel fully present and enjoy the scent of the earth while working.

Let’s now get back to clay and one special connection.

Trees and clay kind of speak the same language 🤎
both breathe with the earth.

Trees pull minerals up from the soil, and clay is those minerals. When a tree falls and decomposes, it eventually feeds the clay again.

So, in a quiet way, your mug and the forest outside are part of the same long conversation ✨🌿🌳
