This sculptural vase was created as a tribute to all women.
Hand-built from beige stoneware clay using the coil-building technique, it is finished with a copper glaze and fired using the Japanese-inspired raku tradition, a dramatic and unpredictable process where fire, air, smoke and clay come together.
The piece is fired to around 1000°C and removed from the kiln while still glowing hot. It then goes through a reduction process, where the lack of oxygen and smoke transform the glaze, creating the characteristic crackling and beautiful deep grey tones with a metallic sheen from the copper.
Because raku-fired ceramics are porous and not intended for holding water, this piece is best enjoyed as a sculptural object or styled with dried flowers.
The vase is handmade, signed on the bottom, and completely one of a kind.
